Jitendra Swarup, MD

Dr. Jitendra Swarup is one of the world’s leading cataract surgeons, performing more than 30,000 cataract surgeries. He graduated with honors at the prestigious Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C., and received his Ophthalmology training at Sinai Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, where he served as a Chief Resident and was involved in the initial FDA approval for the Excimer Laser.
Dr. Swarup has been involved with the Excimer Laser since 1993. He has been performing LASIK surgery since its introduction in 1996.

Dr. Jitendra Swarup specializes in therapeutic and cosmetic plastic surgery, glaucoma surgery, laser surgery for diabetic eye disease and micro-incision (no stitch) cataract surgery. He is the only area physician offering the mono and multifocal implants to patients.

Dr. Swarup has received regional and national awards for his scientific presentations. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a respected member of many medical and ophthalmologic societies including the Academy of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Jitendra Swarup is licensed in North Carolina as well as Virginia, and is also the Medical Director of Albemarle Clinical Trials, LLC as well as the staff physician and partner of Albemarle Eye Center, PLLC with 3 additional locations in; Kitty Hawk, NC, Edenton, NC and Washington, NC. In addition to this Dr. Swarup is also affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Albemarle Health, Vidant Beaufort Hospital, Outer Banks Hospital and Chowan Hospital. He is one of 3 doctors at Albemarle Health and one of 2 at Vidant Beaufort Hospital who specialize in Ophthalmology.

Dr. Swarup lectures nationally on subjects pertaining to cataract surgery, intraocular lens implantation and management of complications. He has also been involved in many cataract and intraocular lens research studies to investigate new technologies.

Dr. Jitendra Swarup has authored as well as co-authored numerous papers and textbook chapters pertaining to cataract surgery, complication of cataract surgery and the development of new cataract technologies. He is the only certified Laser Cataract Surgeon in the region, and offers the bladeless LenSx Laser surgery for his patients.
