LASIK Alternatives

PRK is performed with an excimer laser, which uses a cool ultraviolet light beam to precisely remove (ablate) tissue from the surface of the cornea in order to reshape it. When the cornea is reshaped in the proper manner, it more precisely focuses light into the eye and onto the retina, providing clear vision.

Both nearsighted and farsighted people can benefit from PRK. With nearsighted people, the goal is to flatten the too-steep cornea; with farsighted people, a steeper cornea is desired. Additionally, excimer lasers can correct astigmatism by smoothing an irregular cornea into a more normal shape.

People with a very thin cornea or with certain pre-existing conditions are better candidates for PRK. It is important to always make your decision in conjunction with a trained eye doctor. LASIK and PRK are performed as outpatient procedures. Dr. Swarup calculates the exact correction and adjusts the laser for your particular prescription. The actual PRK surgery usually takes less than five minutes.
